Hug Donations at London Friend Finder Prom 2018

Hello! Faye here! Time for another a little update from me...

Last week, was a special one and I'm excited to be sat with a cuppa ready to talk about an incredible event Charlotte, Georgina and I were able to attend on Wednesday.

For every 50 gifts we sell we donate one personalised hug in a box to someone affected by a life-limiting illness.

Thanks to our lovely Hug Donation Assistant Georgina's hard work, we now have 4 charity partners. One of these is Friend Finder. And it was the Friend Finder prom at YouTube's HQ in London that we were lucky enough to attend to give out some of our hug donations in person.

friend finder

Friend Finder is a wonderful charity which was founded by Lewis Hine after he became very poorly at a young age. As Lewis was not well enough to go to school, spending long stretches of time in hospital and having operations, he did not have opportunities to maintain friendships or make new friends. Lewis saw that he wasn't the only one experiencing loneliness and isolation like this and he decided that he wanted to give young people like himself the opportunity form friendships they might struggle to make otherwise.

Lewis, with the amazing support of him mum Emma, has created these opportunities in a beautiful way through proms held across the country.  Anyone who has missed or is likely to miss their Prom due to illness or disability is invited, along with their families. All are welcome in these incredibly inclusive and accessible events.

The London prom on Wednesday was amazing. From the moment the nominated young people arrived there were opportunities to form special memories and make new friends. Whether that be while they had their hair and make up done, when they walked the red carpet, met Nick Grimshaw, ate a delicious 3 course dinner, had their photo taken professionally or danced the night away.

It was a privilege to be able to play a small role in the event, giving a personalised gift to each of the young people attending as a memento of the night. Since we are mainly online, it's rare to get to see our hugs opened by recipients in person. I know Georgina, Charlotte and I all had a tear in our eye at some point throughout the evening.

Meeting ellie-may

We were lucky enough to be sat on a table with quite possibly the coolest person I have ever met, Ellie-May and her lovely mum Kathryn. Ellie-May was an absolute joy to spend time with and had me giggling away throughout dinner with her impressions. She was warm and kind and funny and I came away feeling incredibly lucky to have had the chance to meet her. I've no doubt we'll be seeing her on the standup circuits one day! Ellie-May had the first official photo taken with our lovely Bill the Bear. It's going to be one I look back on very fondly for a long time to come.

I am so happy that we are able to make donations like these. We couldn't do it without lovely people like you sending hugs to your loved ones so I really can't thank you enough for that.

A huge thank you too to Lewis and Emma for having us. It was such a lovely evening we felt very lucky to be a small part of.
