THE KINDNESS ADVENT CALENDAR - AN ACTIVITY PACK

At BearHugs we believe that acts of kindness, no matter how small, are never wasted, and we could think of no better way to get this across by teaching children at a young age about the importance of being kind. We feel that kindness can get a little lost in the lead up to Christmas with all the (lovely!) festivities, therefore we have created an activity pack based around a ‘Kindness Advent Calendar’.

The activity pack is aimed at Key stage one (5-7 year olds) and supports a school’s current PSHE planning and assessment, by providing further opportunities to enhance children’s understanding across the subject area and beyond.

The resources have been designed by a qualified Primary School Teacher, with experience of teaching in Key stage one, who is passionate about nurturing children’s understanding of being kind to others, as well as themselves. This is reflected across the activity pack, in addition to providing yourself and class with enjoyable activities!

Key learning opportunities throughout, based upon objectives from the PSHE Association, aim to enrich children’s development in the areas of moral, social and emotional well-being; most specifically to develop:

  • Empathy

  • Mindfulness

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • A sense of responsibility

The activities also provide cross-curricular learning opportunities within the areas of:

  • Reading and writing

  • Speaking and listening

  • Mathematics

  • Drama

The main elements of the activity pack include:

  • An Interactive PowerPoint; including introductory videos, an interactive Kindness Advent Calendar, with teacher guidance in the form of key questions, words and estimated time lengths for each day.

  • A guidance folder for teachers; including direction for teaching assistants to support children with Additional Educational Needs (AEN/SEN) and/or English as an Additional Language (EAL), and ways to extend children’s understanding further.

  • A set of physical resources to complete the calendar’s activities.

  • A letter to be sent home to parents/carers with a copy of the calendar for the children.

Lastly, a teacher knows their class best, therefore, although a main structure is suggested, the activity pack is also designed to be a flexible approach to fit around your class and timetable.

Put simply, our ‘Kindness Enrichment Resources’ help children to learn how to treat other people how they would like to be treated and, during the festive period, to ‘Remember to be Kind in December’.
